The church is emptying and society follows. That is not a private matter for pastors. The church was one of the last places where people from different layers heard the same words each week, shared the same table, remembered the same dead. When that rhythm falls, cohesion falls. Then comes decay. Not in one bang. Layer by layer. Into the institutions.
A society ashamed of its roots uses its gains as if they fell from the sky — bread, craft, language, saints, fairy tales, kaatsen, allotments, the right to be stubborn and the right to be proud. If you may no longer carry that, grey remains. Colour has been pulled from the street for twenty years. Humans need colour. Not as fashion. As recognition.
At the same time trades vanish from the vocabulary. Fisherman. Whelk-digger. Farmer. Decoy-man. Hunter. Master. Beekeeper. Herdsman. Harlequin. Poet. Dancer. Fencer. Ship-breakers. The national engine is moved to a far country because of environmental norms, nitrogen values, Natura sites, UNESCO sites. Generations rooted before the land was a form may no longer do what their family did for centuries. That is not care for the earth. That is emptying the organs.
Greenpeace lets the Rainbow Warrior sit as scrap on a Southeast Asian coast while European yards scrap there because Europe made scrapping unaffordable. Benidorm introduces the palm weevil. Within a generation the Iberian peninsula stands without palm. Nobody is tapped on the fingers. That is the kind of holiness this book will not copy.
The aim is a sturdy Western society. Proud of its roots. Steadfast. Culture high. Enjoying what has been won, material and immaterial. Not as a museum. As a living rhythm.
What the guild does with this. Name the lost trades out loud. Put colour back on people who still have a craft. Do not wait for a ministry to restore Sunday.
