About Finestrat
Finestrat is a municipality with two worlds: an inland village at the foot of the mountain and a small cove next to Benidorm. The 1,410-metre Puig Campana rises less than eight kilometres in a straight line from the Mediterranean and lies entirely within the municipality. Its outline is recognisable from many points in the province, and its western summit has a large gap known as El Portell.
The historic centre keeps the traditional layout of houses hanging over the rock, backs to the mountain and eyes on the sea. It is built on the foundations of an Arab castle, at the top of which, since 1924, stands the hermitage of the Santísimo Cristo del Remedio, surrounded by the Castle viewpoint. Its narrow streets, with their Moorish layout, can be explored on the «Descubre Finestrat» route, a one-and-a-half-kilometre trail with information panels and games designed for families.
At the foot of the Puig Campana is the Font del Molí, where rules have governed the use of its water since 1851. Today it is a recreation area with parking, a picnic area and a tourist information point, and the starting point for hiking routes, including the full loop around the mountain. Going up to the Font del Molí to eat the «mona» (Easter cake) on Easter day is a fixed tradition for the people of Finestrat.
On the coast, Finestrat has only about 270 metres of beach: the Cala de Finestrat, a sandy bay between Benidorm and Villajoyosa, with a Blue Flag and its own TRAM stop.
The big fiesta comes in August, from the 15th to the 24th, with the patron saint fiestas in honour of Sant Bertomeu and the Santíssim Crist del Remei, which bring together more than a thousand festeros. On Fridays, the weekly street market sets up in the Plaça de la Unió Europea, above the municipal car park.
